Projects
‘Great Ormond Street Historic Patient Records Database (www.smallandspecial.org).' The project was run by the Centre for Local History Studies at Kingston University and funded by the Wellcome Trust Research Resources in Medical History, the Nuffield Foundation and Friends of Great Ormond Street.
My particular contribution included the development and application of a disease classification system reflecting medical knoweldge in the late 19th century, the development of the website ‘Small and Special' which hosts the database and the development of content for the website, particularly with regard to nursing in the hospital.
Nurses' Voices (http://www.nursesvoices.org.uk/). This oral history project is run by the Faculty for Health and Social Care Sciences, Kingston University. I was involved in the setting up of their first oral history project, which focussed on nurses from St George's Hospital London, and carried out several of the early interviews.
Current Projects
‘Historic Hospital Records Project.' Centre for Local History Studies, Kingston University, funded by Wellcome Trust Research Resources in Medical History.
This project aims to apply the methodology developed for the Great Ormond Street project to two further London children's hospitals, the Evelina and the Alexandra Hospital for Children with Hip Disease. I am the project manager, a role which again will include the development of a website, in addition to managing the project's timeline.
I am also currently carrying out some oral history interviews for Fortnum and Mason, which is celebrating 300 years in business.
Work in Progress
I am planning several papers and a book arising out of my doctoral research, including the following:
Catherine Wood (1841-1930): midwife to paediatric nursing
From Maid to Matron: one Victorian woman's experience of nursing as means to social advancement
